Black Lives Matter Panel

A black led organization refuses to remain silent after the several deaths of innocent African American males.

Black Lives Matter organizer Melina Abdullah says that we cannot forget about the black lives lost by common injustices.

Abdullah is a professor and Chair of Pan-African Studies at Cal State Los Angeles.

She spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists chapter meeting on Saturday Nov. 21st to discuss racial injustices and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Abdullah said although many tragedies are happening around the world, we should still be conscious about the tragedies happening here at home.

She said, “when Paris happens, all of a sudden, we don’t have to talk about what’s happening here anymore. So keeping it in the media is really important. It’s important we don’t forget the names of the people who were killed.”

Abdullah said there was a moment of silence for Paris, but not for those killed by the hands of police.

She said, “I think that it’s also really important that we say why we’re focused so much on black folks, is because it’s black folks who are killed with the regularity that we are.”

Black Lives Matter is an organization that is committed to ending state violence against black people.
